Thomas enlisted on August 10, 1814 in Hampshire County VA as a private in Captain William Neiley's company of Virginia Militia. He was discharged on November 10, 1814. WC34297
He later moved from Hampshire to Randolph to Braxton County VA. He was allowed a pension on his application of April 10, 1871. He went on the rolls as of November 1871. The certificate was 7558 and the name was spelled "BELKNUP."

He married Mary "Polly" Friend about 1818. Mary, a daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Harris) Friend, was born in 1799 and died in Braxton County March 4, 1850.
Thomas married Melvina "Emsey" Fisher in Braxton County July 26, 1850. Emsey, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Robinson) Fisher, was born in Nicholas County VA in May 1921 and died in Braxton County March 2, 1907.
