Charles E. Sponseller

U.S. VeteranCharles E. ?Sponnie? Sponseller, 83 of Abbottstown entered into God?s eternal care on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at Hanover Hospital. He was the husband of the late Ruthanna M. (Strausbaugh) Sponseller, who died July 8, 1989. Born March 11, 1932 in Adams Co., he was the son of the late Ernest L. and Margie V.M. (Stremmel) Sponseller.
Charles served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at the Hanover Shoe Farm in the early 1960?s after his honorable discharge from the service. He then gave more than 30 years of service to Conewago Enterprises, Inc. where he was a heavy equipment operator. Charles attended Cross Keys Fellowship, New Oxford and was a Life Member of the Hanover VFW Post 2506. Sponnie was a member of the PA Antique Auto Club and had a collection of 13 antique cars at one point in time. He could be found at antique car shows, working on his farm, and being ?Pap? to his grandsons.
He is survived by his daughter, Candis A. Wolford and her husband Robert of Hanover; two grandsons, Duane A. Wolf and his wife Jennie of York Springs and Donovan A. Wolf of York Springs; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Charles Wolf and Allison N. Wolf of York Springs; two step grandchildren, Corey Wolford and Michelle Lucabaugh; his companion of 15 years, Shirley Bastress of Abbottstown; three siblings, Helen Hockensmith of Gettysburg, Norm Sponseller of Hampton, PA and Bob Sponseller of East Berlin, PA; four step-children, Dennis Bastress, Cary Bastress, Cherie Clark and Brenda Kennedy; and many other family members and friends who loved him including his loving pet dog ?Snuggles?.
Charles was also preceded in death by his siblings, Nadine Myers, Naomi Sentz, Shirley Myers, Burnell Sponseller and Delores Kress.
A service to celebrate the life of Charles ?Sponnie? Sponseller will be held at 11am on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015 at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA with Pastor Sandy Adams, Jr. officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Saturday from 9:00am until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Marburg Memorial Gardens, Hanover where full military honors will be provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Duane Wolf, Donovan Wolf, Matthew Wolf, Dennis Bastress, Cary Bastress and Bill Clark.
