William C. Gass, 69, Sunbury

SUNBURY -- William Clayton "Bill" Gass, 69, of 210 State St., went to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, April 9, 2009, after an eight-year battle with cancer.

He was born April 27, 1939, at the Mary M. Packer Hospital, Sunbury, the son of Erma K. (Shaffer) Gass and the late Henry J. Gass. On Nov. 5, 1960, in Augusta Baptist Church, he married the former Nancy Ella Bastress, who survives.

Bill was a 1957 graduate of Sunbury High School. He completed courses in time study, human resources, and safety and health. He received completion certificates from the Maynard Research Council, American Management Association, Pennsylvania State University and Bloomsburg University.

After high school, Bill enlisted in the Air Force and served on Sondrestrom Air Force Base in Greenland and several United States bases.

Bill was employed at Wilhold, Sunbury, for 36 years and was human resources manager when the factory closed in 1997. He retired in 1998 from Philips Products, Selinsgrove.

He was a member of Stonington Baptist Church, where he served several terms on the church board and was Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and building fund treasurer. He also was a member of the Buck Ridge Hunting Club, NRA and the Upper Augusta Township Fire Company.

Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, watching NASCAR races and Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and David Sharr of Sunbury; one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Sandie Gass of Royersford; and five granddaughters, Meghan Gass of Leominster, Mass., Ashley, Samantha and Hannah of Royersford and Megan of Fort Know, Ky.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Stonington Baptist Church, Stonington, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. J. Douglas Hallman officiating.

Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.

Memorial gifts may be made in Bill's memory to the Stonington Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
