He was born July 16, 1926, in Northumberland, a son of the late Muirheid and Margaret (Neibert) Shuman. On July 23, 1947, he married the former Faye Bastress, who survives. His passing breaks a marital union of nearly 59 years.

Mr. Shuman was a 1944 graduate of Northumberland High School.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Air Force. He enlisted in the Air Force at Susquehanna University and when called into active duty was sent overseas with the 9th Air Force and was attached to the 40th Mobile Repair and Reclamation. He was honorably discharged in 1946 when he was called home, due to his father's failing health, to help with the family business, Shuman's Market, which operated not only as a market but as a store on wheels with his father and brother.

Don and his wife owned and operated Shuman's Floral Center for more than 25 years. He was formerly employed by Merck and Co., Riverside, and later worked for Shippers Car Line, Milton, as a railroad tanker repairman. He retired in 1990 after 25 years of employment.

As a youth, Don was active in the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Mr. Shuman was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Northumberland.

He was a life member of the Northumberland Fire Company No. 1 and American Legion Post 44, also of Northumberland. Don served on the Northumberland Sewer Authority and was vice chairman since its inception. He was also a member of the Shade Tree Commission and a past member of the Northumberland Housing Authority.

Don was best known for being an avid gardener. He took great pleasure and pride in growing and developing a beautiful garden. He also enjoyed furniture refurbishing and had a keen sense of humor with both his family and friends. Don especially enjoyed cooking and was well known for his culinary skills with his family and friends.

Don was a devoted husband and father who took special delight in his grandchildren and great-grandson. He treasured the time he spent with them.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Faye, are four daughters and sons-in-law, Donne and Ed Lewis of Elkton, Md., Denise and Leo Ryan of Hillsborough, N.J., Patricia Shuman and Charles Hickam of Albuquerque, N.M., and Pamela and David Heim of Northumberland; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Douglas Shuman and Carla Mahaffey of Turbotville and Philip Shuman of Newport, Vt.; six grandchildren, Kathleen Ryan Breuer and husband Kevin, Patricia Ryan, Nathan Heim, and Melissa, Cadence and Nova Shuman; one great-grandson, Luke Breuer; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Joan Shuman of Cape Cod, Mass.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Tom Sheehan of Hillsborough.
